The choice between single-side frosting, double-side frosting and double-sided polishing starts with the function of the glass surface. Does it need to spread illumination, provide a viewing plane, preserve image quality, accept a coating or participate in a bonding process? None of the three finishes is inherently superior. Each establishes a different interaction with light, handling and downstream manufacturing.

Distinguish final function from an intermediate process

Frosted is a descriptive term for a scattering appearance or function. Ground and lapped identify abrasive processing conditions; either can describe an intermediate blank rather than a finished optical diffuser. Polished identifies a smooth finish whose actual quality must still be specified. G/P, G/G and P/P are useful workshop shorthand only if G and P are defined on the drawing.

A smooth reverse face on a single-side frosted component might be an original high-quality surface rather than a separately polished face. Document its condition and requirements instead of assuming a particular polishing process.

Compare the three finished surface choices

Finish

Useful purpose

Potential limitation

Key acceptance topics

Single-side frosted

One scattering face with a smooth opposite interface.

Orientation matters; smooth-side quality still needs definition.

Face identity, diffusion, useful transmission, reverse face, edge and cleaning.

Double-side frosted

Two intentionally scattering or matte faces.

More interfaces to qualify and clean; not an automatic efficiency improvement.

Each face's texture, consistency, optical setup and delivered clean condition.

Double-sided polished

Smooth faces for low-scatter optical or process functions.

Smoothness alone does not establish geometry, defects or bonding compatibility.

Texture, TTV, flatness, parallelism, shape, defects and cleanliness as applicable.

Use the component's position in the system

For machine-vision illumination or microscope illumination, intentional diffusion can help condition the source. In an image-forming path, the same texture may reduce contrast or create stray light. An LED diffuser should be evaluated at the real source and receiver distances. A smooth window should be assessed for the actual spectral and image-quality requirements.

For FA/FAU-related covers, determine whether the glass is a structural, adhesive or optical interface. For MEMS and semiconductor wafers, identify lithography, bonding, coating and TGV requirements separately. A finish suitable for an illumination screen is not a universal finish for these functional surfaces.

Do not exchange one metric for another

Grit is a process description, not a universal conversion to Ra. Ra or Rq describes texture over a defined profile measurement; Sa or Sq describes areal texture. Haze and angular scattering describe optical behavior under test conditions. A roughness value does not uniquely establish diffuser performance.

TTV describes the range of thickness values over a defined map. Flatness concerns a specified surface and reference evaluation. Parallelism concerns face orientation. Bow and warp describe shape using specified definitions and support conditions. Scratch-dig concerns localized surface imperfections under its governing convention, rather than roughness or global geometry.

Material and process sequence change the decision

Borosilicate, aluminosilicate, fused silica and other optical glasses differ in chemical and abrasive response. The proposed surface treatment must be qualified for the actual material and dimensions. Previously strengthened glass, coated surfaces and fragile features need particular attention to process order.

Agree when cutting, drilling, finishing and cleaning occur. Subsequent steps can damage or contaminate a previously accepted face. Raw-sheet quality does not automatically prove final-part TTV, surface figure or cleanliness after machining.

Set limits from a testable requirement

Do not assign a generic nanometer roughness, micrometer TTV or scratch-dig grade to all polished glass. Limit selection depends on function, material, dimensions, support and measurement. A requirement should identify the evaluated region, method and decision rule. Samples from the actual route should establish feasibility before production limits are agreed.

The same principle applies to frosted glass: define the optical setup and measurable performance instead of “make it more white.” A visual sample can supplement a functional specification, provided its identity and comparison conditions are retained.

Follow a focused guide for the chosen finish
